Fifty-first annual report on the health and sanitary condition of the Metropolitan Borough of Islington

then to 114 in 1901. Among those from 5 to 15 years old the proportion has
decreased from 229 in 1881 to 228 in 1891, only a small decrease, and to 210
in 1901.
In the next age period, that of adolescence, 15-25, the population has
increased from 188 per 1,000 in 1881 to 193 in 1891, and to 196 in 1901,
although in Islington it has remained practically stationary, the proportion
being 197, 200 and 199 respectively at the average censuses.
At the remaining age periods the general tendency has been for the
proportions to increase, and consequently the population throughout the
country contains more persons in proportion, and actually, than it has
contained at any time during the last sixty years.
What bearing these changes may have on the vital statistics will be
considered when the mortality returns are dealt with.
