1906] 264
During the year i paid 114 visits to the nine cowsheds, and generally speaking they
have been well kept. Owing, however, to the indifference of a cowman I had on two
occasions to complain of the infrequency of thoroughly cleansing the floor, by which cows'
udders and adjacent parts became fouled. As a consequence the cowman was discharged
and better results have followed.
Only one case of disease of the udder was detected during the year, and this was notified
to the Medical Officer of Health of the London County Council and referred to their
Veterinary Inspector.
Offensive Trades.—These comprise 3 tripe dressers, 2 gut scrapers, and 1 tallow melter,
and have received 87 visits, and with the exception of the last named the businesses have
been satisfactorily carried on. This was a constant source of trouble and complaint during
the hot weather owing to the escape into the external air of obnoxious fumes from the
melting fat combined with other decomposing animal matter, although the process is supposed
to be carried on in sealed chambers.
The knacker's yard has been visited on 46 occasions, and has been found from time to
time in good sanitary condition, and no complaint has been received in regard to it.
The amount of meat and other foodstuffs condemned during the year was as follows:—
Tons. Cwts. Qrs. lbs.
Diseased meat and organs from slaughter-houses as per
Table "A" 13 1 25
Diseased and unsound meat and other foodstuffs from
shops and factories condemned as per Table "B" 1 7 3 5
Tons 2 112
As compared with that of the year 1902 the amount under table "A" shows a reduction of
2 tons 9 cwts. 1 qr. 27 lbs., whilst that under table "B" shows an increase of 12 cwts.
3 qrs. 13 lbs.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
H. WILKINSON,
Meat Inspector.
