The above return brings up the amount of food stuffs destroyed ir
Islington duing the last six years to nearly 20 tons, which is a considerable
quantity when it is recollected that there are no large markets as in the City
and in the neighbouring borough of Finsbury to be dealt with.
SlaughterHouses.—These numbered 39 at the close of the year, and
to them were paid 2,240 visits, during which time 32,994 animals which had
been slaughtered came under inspection. This number was 79 below that of
the animals killed in 1905. The figures for the past three years are given for
the sake of contrast in the following table: —
Animals killed. 1904. 1905. 1906.
Oxen 2,360 2,195 2,172
Cows 4 17 -
Calves 154 127 143
Sheep 32,973 30,686 30,668
Pigs 25 48 11
35,516 33,073 32,994
The most remarkable feature about this return is that not a single cow
was killed in an Islington slaughterhouse during 1906.
During the previous three years the slaughter of old cows had been
gradually declining, although at one time a very large number was dealt with,
as the following figures obtained from the Inspector's reports will show:—
1899 402 were killed.
1900 668 „
1901 440 ” (six months).
1902 498 „
1903 173 ”
1904 4 ”
1905 17 ”
1906 - ”
