DISTRICT INSPECTION.
There are fourteen inspectors engaged in the general inspection of the
borough, to each of whom there is an area allotted on which an average of more
than 24,000 persons dwell. This is a large charge, and is not always recollected
when persons discuss the number of Inspectors employed in Islington.
There are many towns in England where with populations of such a size at
least two Inspectors are employed. It can be affirmed that their numbers are
none too great for the important, and let it be added ever increasing, duties
which they have to perform, as may be gathered from the fact that during the
year they made over 83,000 visits for one purpose or another.
Inspections and Visits.—9,134 houses were inspected, entailing 62,663
subsequent calls, so that altogether 71,797 visits were made, in addition to which
11,371 visits were entailed in inspecting ice-cream factories, dairies, and milkshops,
stables and yards, manure depots, and railway sidings, houses for which
Inland Revenue exemption certificates had been applied, new houses as to their
water supply, smoke nuisances, etc. An important part of their duty, too, is
the enquiries respecting infectious disease, which it may be said is sometimes
very trying, because no matter what the ordinary work for the day may be the
enquiry respecting these diseases must be made so that the Public Elementary
Schools, and, indeed, all schools, may be apprised of infection among their
scholars, or in their homes, at the very earliest moment. The following return
gives a synopsis of the nature and number of the visits of the Inspectors:—
