Islington. It may be of interest to see how the population was, housed, in
the past. This is shown in the following figures:—
No. of inhabitants
Year. No. of houses. to each house.
1811 2,339 6.3
1821 3,495 6.4
1831 5,797 6.4
1841 8,508 6.5
1851 13,528 7.0
1861 20,704 7.5
1871 27,079 7.9
1881 34,046 8.3
1891 37,875 8.4
1901 38,645 8.6
This statement indicates that the housing of the people did not keep
pace with the increase of the population, and that consequently the residents
crowded more and more together, so that a house wherein a single family
lived at one time became occupied by two or more families. This points to
the steady growth in the number of tenements which were let to individual
families, to which allusion will be made presently.
The number of occupants in the house is naturally not the same in each
of the sub-districts, for it is found that:—
In Highbury there are 8,786 houses with 7.3 persons per house.
In Upper Holloway there are 12,149 houses containing on an average
8.2 persons per house.
In Islington South-East there are 8,034 houses with 9.4 persons per
house.
In Barnsbury there are 5,558 houses with 9.8 persons per house.
In Lower Holloway there are 4,118 houses containing on an average
10.1 persons per house.
In a most complete report, which was presented to the Council in 1904,
the question of crowding was dealt with at great length, and it was then shown
as indicated by the figures just given, that the houses of Lower Holloway are
more crowded than the houses in any of the other sub-districts, after which
comes Barnsbury, then Islington South-East, next Upper Holloway, and
lastly Highbury.
As this report is so replete with information respecting the housing
of the people of Islington it is very essential that the present Borough
