DIPHTHERIA.
Diphtheria was notified in 437 instances, as compared with a decennial
average of 678, so that there was a very substantial decrease in the known
cases of this disease.
The cases were equal to an attack-rate of 1.27 per 1,000, as against a rate
of 1.96 during the preceding decennium. It is also satisfactory to note that it
compared favourably with the attack-rate of London, which was 1.71, and
with that of the Encircling Boroughs, which was 1.48 per 1,000.
Hospital Isolation.-It is gratifying to observe that 344, or 78.3 per
cent., of the cases were removed to hospital for treatment.
Fatality.-32 deaths were registered among the 437 cases, so that
the fatality rate was equal to 7.3 per 1,000 of the known cases. This is the
lowest record since their notification was first made compulsory, when it was
as high as 23.5 per cent. This record is so remarkable that the return
of the cases, deaths, and fatality is herewith given, as it is well worthy of
permanent record, showing, as it does, that it has decreased 69 per cent.
since 1891.
