Tubercular Diseases. Tuberculosis of the Lungs or Phthisis, Tuberculosis
of the Brain, Tuberculosis of the Larynx, Tuberculosis of the Abdomen or Tabes
Mesenterica, and General Tuberculosis.
Phthisis-It is satisfactory to find that the return of 411 deaths is the
lowest which has been made in Islington during thirteen years, and that it is
as many as 135 below the corrected average of those years. The death-rate
was equal to 1.19 per 1,000 of the population as compared with 1.58 per 1,000
in the period 1894-1905. The mortality from Phthisis always bears a high
ratio to the deaths from all causes registered in the Borough, and during
1906 it was 8.14 per cent., a proportion which compares favourably with
that of 9.96 per cent. during the thirteen years selected for comparative
purposes.
