Puerperal Diseases—Under this classification are included the returns
from puerperal pyaemia, septicaemia, sapræmia, septic intoxication, and the indefinite
appellation " puerperal fever "
Altogether only 6 deaths were registered, which is the lowest number since
1900, when it was the same as at present. The return is 5 below the average
of the preceding 10 years, and is equal to a mortality of 0.68 per 1,000 births.
It is to be hoped that the low figure now reached will not be exceeded in
the future, and indeed there is hope that this may be so, from the fact that midwives
are now very closely supervised by the London County Council and by
the Public Health Department of the Borough.
