SMALL POX.
There was one death from this disease during the year.
This case occurred at 45, Winchester Street. The patient was an Italian
who had only arrived in this country a short while previous to his attack
and had not been well since his arrival. Owing to the severity of the disease
it could not be ascertained whether he had been vaccinated or not. He was
of course removed to the Metropolitan Asylums Board Hospital, where he
subsequently died.
This case caused considerable anxiety as he was one of eleven male
Italians who lived with their wives and children at this address. They were,
however, prevented from going to work, were interned in their homes and
given a sum of money to provide for their immediate necessities.
This death from Small Pox was 10 below the corrected average of the
preceding twenty years.
In London 9 other deaths from this disease were known, 2 in Hackney,
2 in Shoreditch, 1 in Stepney and 4 in Lewisham.
