1905] 12
MARRIAGES.
The number of persons married in the year was 5,968, which corresponds
to a rate of 17.40 persons married per 1,000 of the population, which is
0.51 below the mean rate of the decennial period 1893-1904. It is also the
lowest rate with one exception registered in this period, for in the preceding
year it was only 17.29. During the ten years the rate varied from 15.97 in
1895 to 19.35 in 1899, since which year the tendency has been downwards,
although there was a slight recrudescence in 1902 and 1903.
The marriage rate varied greatly, as usual, in the different periods of the
year, for in the first quarter it was 12.06, in the second 17.61, in the third 21.85,
and in the fourth 18.07.
It is impossible to give the ages of the persons at marriage; and in this
connection it may be noted that for a long period past the Registrar-General
has ceased to give tables in his annual report showing the ages at which the
population married, although generally there is a brief statement in his
introductory letter.
