Greenwich, Wandsworth, Camberwell, Hackney and Lambeth. When its
area is contrasted with the great towns, it is found that Huddersfield, for
instance, with less than a third of its population covers 11,000 acres; that
Sheffield with about the same population is spread over 19,000 acres, Leeds
over 21,000, Nottingham over 10,000, and Birmingham over 12,000. Consequently
the population of Islington lives on a very much more confined area than
that of these large towns, and is, therefore, handicapped by its environment.
The areas of the sub-registration districts and the Wards are given in
tables I. and II.
