Small-pox.
One case of small-pox was notified during the year, this being
the first case of small-pox that has occurred in Hampstead since
October, 1903. The patient, a manager of a Shipping Company,
was residing in Upper Park Road when he was taken ill. The first
symptoms began on April 18th, the rash appearing on April '21st.
The patient was staying in Madeira from April 1st to April 7th,
leaving on the latter date by a vessel coming from South America to
England. He landed at Liverpool on April 15th, and at once proceeded
to Hampstead. The rash in small.pox usually appears on
the 15th day from the date of infection, and, therefore, the patient
was probably infected either at Madeira or on the voyage home.
The patient was promptly removed to hospital, the premises, bedding,
etc., were disinfected, and the contacts were re.vaccinated
and kept under supervision for three weeks after exposure to
infection. No subsequent case occurred.
