1909. The lady visitors connected with St. George's Maternity Society
have co-operated in making the inquiry, so that the result of the
investigations ought to afford considerable insight into the conditions
which, in this neighbourhood, compel mothers to go to work.
(7) Special cases.
A considerable number of cases were reported during the year from
various sources, such as Hospitals, Relief Committees, and DistrictVisitors,
etc., with the request that a visit may be paid to the home,
mainly with a view to improving the general domestic conditions. As
stated in last year's report, the information given is not necessarily in
the form of a complaint, but the circumstances described are generally
such that an informal visit of instruction might possibly be advantageous.
The cases reported from Hospitals, for example, generally refer to
patients who are found to be suffering from want of cleanliness, fresh air,
or improper feeding. Those reported from Lying-in Hospitals are
notifications of births only, and these have been received through the
London County Council, or have been sent by the Medical Officer of
Health in whose Borough the Hospital is situated.
All cases reported are entered in a special register, together with
the name and address of the person, or agency, who sends the information.
The homes are visited, if possible, the same day, and my report
is entered, as well as notes of recurring visits.
Some of the cases are entered separately, under the heading of
" Phthisis " and " Infantile Management."
