The average birth-rate of the Borough for the year 1901-1906 is
212, and of the Home District of the Parish of Chelsea for the 5 years
1896-1900, 24.1 per 1000. The birth-rate for 1907, 20.0, is 0.2 per
1000 lower than that of 1906, and is the lowest yet recorded.
During the past year, as in 1905 and 1906, weekly copies of the
Registers of Births and of births attended in the Borough by registered
midwives have been forwarded to this office respectively by the
Registrars of Births and Deaths and by the London County Council,
and later in this Report will be given information as to the birth-rates
and infantile mortality rates of various classes of the community.
During the year 60 births were registered as having occurred in the
Chelsea Workhouse, equivalent to 4.2 per cent. of the total number of
births in the Borough.
DEATHS AND DEATH-RATE FOR 1907.
The total number of deaths registered in the Borough was 1688.
Of this number 712 were deaths within the Borough of non-parishioners
—chiefly occurring in hospitals and in the St. George's Infirmary ; and
142 deaths of parishioners of Chelsea occurred outside the Borough in
various public institutions. There were, therefore, 1118 deaths of
parishioners of Chelsea. These 1118 deaths are equivalent to a deathrate
for the year of 15.0 per 1000, as against a death-rate of 15.7
per 1000 in 1906.
