Section IV.
THE SANITARY CONDITION OF THE BOROUGH.
The tabular statements prepared by the Sanitary Inspectors show
that 1281 separate premises were reported on by them during 1907, 449
of this number being with reference to cases of notifiable infectious
disease, and 326 in the course of house-to-house inspections made in
certain of the poorer streets of the Borough.
It has been necessary to take legal proceedings for breaches of the
Public Health (London) Act in respect of five houses, and also for the
emission of black smoke from the 4 chimneys of the Electric Generating
Station, Lots-road.
Drainage.—During the year 63 new drains for single houses have
been reconstructed in accordance with the London County Council's
drainage regulations.
Combined Drainage.—Six systems of combined drainage, for which
the owners of the houses were responsible, were sanctioned by the
Borough Council in the course of the year. The Borough Council was
not called upon in 1907 to reconstruct any systems of combined drainage,
which were sewers vested in the Sanitary Authority. From 1896 to
1907 inclusive, the sum of £511 has been expended from the rates on
the combined drainage of private property, equivalent to an annual
outlay of £42 11s.
Inspection of Restaurant Kitchens, 1907.
Number of restaurant and hotel kitchens 61
„ inspections made 98
„ premises found satisfactory 57
„ premises with sanitary defects 4
„ notices served 4
Disinfection.—During the past year, 421 premises have been disinfected,
after cases of infectious or other disease, 31 of these being rooms
which had been in occupation by persons suffering from phthisis.
During the year also, 267 rooms were disinfected for the presence
of bugs and other vermin, and were subsequently stripped and cleansed
by the owners of the premises.
A large amount of work was done at the disinfecting station in
1907, 5247 separate articles being disinfected, and 1596 beds, mattresses,
&c., being destroyed in the incinerator. Owing to the large amount of
use to which the incinerator has been put in recent years, the internal
parts are now becoming much worn, and it will be necessary to have the
furnaces thoroughly renovated during the current year.
