An examination of the returns for 1907, reveals the following
two facts:-(a) The cases of cancer in men recorded in Finsbury
numbered 39, of which 18, or 46.1 per cent. were cases of cancer of
the alimentary canal; (b) the cases among women numbered 47,
of which 14, or 29.7 per cent., were cases of cancer of the alimentary
canal, and 17, or 36 per cent., were cases of cancer of the breast
or womb.
ALCOHOLISM.
During 1907, twenty deaths were directly attributed to alcoholism
and delirium tremens. These figures do not, of course, represent
more than a small proportion of the mortality really caused by
alcoholism. It is more than likely that some of the deaths of
infants attributed to being "laid upon" in bed, are really caused
