The number of births registered in the Borough amounted to
6,885, an excess of 152 on the numbers recorded in the previous year.
The increase was markedly shown in North and South Camberwell,
the latter being a district which is now rapidly being built over.
In St. George's and North Peckham there was a notable decrease in
the numbers. Besides the births actually registered in the Borough,
we have to reckon with the children of Camberwell mothers who are
born outside its boundaries. In many instances among this class we
have not been able to find out to which wards they belong, and have
been compelled to re-distribute them in the method referred to (later
on) in connection with the calculation of the death-rate.

It will be seen that the birth-rate has gone up, at all events, in
this Borough. This can in part be ascribed to the building of new
houses of a low rent, which are inhabited frequently by young or
newly married couples, so that the neighbourhood contains a preponderance
of persons at an age when child-bearing is usual.
