Since the increased powers respecting Common Lodging-houses conferred on
the London County Council by the London County Council (General Powers) Act of
1902, fourteen of the Common Lodging-houses in the Borough have been closed
because they failed to carry out the alterations required in order to secure a renewal
of their licenses, and some were afterwards demolished in connection with the new
Kingsway and Sardinia Street.
Details respecting these were given in my Annual Reports for the years 1903,
1904 and 1905.
FACTORIES, WORKSHOPS AND WORKPLACES.
During the year there were 1,077 inspections of factories and workshops, and
1,821 inspections of workplaces; 318 Intimation Notices for sanitary defects were
served and 37 Statutory Notices.
There were also 166 inspections of home workers' premises for which 22
Intimation Notices for sanitary defects were served, and 3 Statutory Notices.
The following table gives the changes that have taken place during the
year, details of the number of premises on the Register at the end of the year,
number of inspections, etc.

* There were in addition, many inspections of Homeworkers' Premises made during the house-to-house
inspections of Lodging Houses and other Dwelling Houses.
† Under this head are included the Kitchens of Hotels, Restaurants and Eating-houses of all sorts,
Slaughter Houses, Tripe, Offal, and other Meat Shops, Fried Fish, Eel, and other Fish Shops,
Ice Cream Shops, and other places where food is prepared for sale, excluding Bakehouses
which are given above.
‡ Registration of Factories is not required by the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, but most of them
were inspected during 1906, and notices served where necessary.
§ There is a very large number of workplaces other than the above, the registration of which is not
required, and many of them were inspected and notices served where necessary.
