To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea
Mr. Mayor and Gentlemen,—
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the Health
and Sanitary conditions of the Borough of Battersea for the year
1908.
The Report is more voluminous than usual. This is due to the
fact that in accordance with the instructions issued to the Medical
Officers of Health by the Local Government Board it has been necessary
to report fully on two outbreaks of Diphtheria which ocurred
during the year in Institutions in the Borough.
The death and infantile mortality rates are the lowest ever
previously recorded in the Borough or the old Parish of Battersea.
Although the incidence of infectious disease, owing mainly to
the continued prevalence of scarlet fever, was higher than in the
previous year, on the other hand, it is satisfactory to be able to
record that the death rate from these diseases was the lowest ever
recorded in the Borough.
It is again my privilege to draw attention to the good work
carried out, and the satisfactory results obtained during the year
1908 in connection with the Battersea Municipal Milk Depôt.
The Sanitary Staff, both individually and collectively, has
worked well, as the records tabulated in this Report testify.
I desire to take the opportunity of expressing my grateful
appreciation of the continued support and assistance I have received
from the Health Committee during the year. To the Heads of
Departments my thanks are also due for assistance always readily
given.
I am,
Mr. Mayor and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
G. QUIN LENNANE.
Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Lavender Hill, S. W.
