During the summer of 1908 a private experiment was carried
out by the Middlesbrough Sanitary Authority in the Small-pox
Hospital of the open-air treatment of 25 women suffering from the
disease, but I have not yet been favoured with results of the
experiment.
In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in addition to the usual precautions,
in special cases bedding is destroyed and replaced by the Corporation.
The Sanitary Committee have recently made arrangements
for the use of 20 beds in the Barrasford Sanatorium for patients
resident in the City. Sunderland provides 2 beds in a Sanatorium,
in addition to other measures, and Brighton reserves 20 beds in
the Borough Sanatorium for the isolation and education of Consumptives.

Edinburgh Compulsory Notification is in force, and a pavilion
is set apart in connection with the City Hospital for the admission
of a fixed number up to 50 of advanced cases of Phthisis. Disinfection

of things, a great deal of energy is being displayed in fighting
the disease. Compulsory notification is, or is about to be, the
law in Ireland. In Dublin, compulsory notification is in force,
and pocket spittoons are supplied by the Corporation gratuitously.
Disinfection is carried out in all cases, and disinfectants supplied
with spittoons. Lady Inspectors visit the homes of patients and
give advice, and literature is distributed freely. In Belfast voluntary
notification is in force. Disinfection is carried out as a
