During the year 729 inspections were made and 49 notices
were served in connection with homework inspection, the results
of which are summarised as follows:—
Male Outworkers (Inspector Benjamin).
Number of male outworkers on register 87
Total number of inspections 226
Number of notices served to remedy 32 defects. 32
Eighteen outworkers removed during the year, 12 of whom
removed to other addresses in the Borough, and 22 new outworkers
were registered.
The defects found in outworkers' premises were mainly those
referring to want of cleanliness of rooms, defective sanitary
fittings, and such like minor sanitary defects.
In the homes of 7 outworkers scarlet fever occurred, one case
in each home. Special precautions were taken in each instance
to prevent the spread of infection.
Female Outworkers (Miss Fairbairn ).
The total number of female outworkers on the Register at the
end of the year 1908 was 155. During the year 83 outworkers
had removed or discontinued for various reasons. In all cases
endeavours are made to trace the whereabouts of these persons,
and were successful in all but 18 instances.
Total number of inspections during 1908 503
Number of notices served to remedy 21 defects 17
The defects for which these notices were required had reference
mainly to defective sanitary fittings, want of cleanliness of
rooms, etc. The condition of the female outworkers' premises
were found to be sanitarily much better than those of male outworkers,
as will be noted from a comparison of the number of
notices served in each class. This is to some extent to be accounted
for owing to the fact that the nature of the work carried
on in the case of female outworkers in Battersea is, in most
cases, such as to necessitate cleanliness being observed.
