In two cases, in premises which had just started the making
of ice cream, but had not been registered, the article was found
being made in rooms used for sleeping purposes. The occupants,
who pleaded ignorance and immediately discontinued the objectionable
practice, were strongly cautioned as to their future action
in this respect.
Restaurants and Eating Houses.
The annual inspection of these premises was systematically
commenced in 1902, and since then a general sanitary supervision
has been exercised over them by Inspector Benjamin. The total
number on the register at the end of 1908 was 90, as compared
with 93 in 1907.
During the year it was found necessary to take action in
connection with sanitary defects in 35 instances. In the majority
of cases these defects were not of a serious nature, and there
is evidence that the strict sanitary supervision has effected a
salutary improvement.
The defects found had reference to dirty condition of premises
(walls, floors, ceilings), defective sanitary appliances, etc.
On the whole, while there is still room for improvement,
the conditions under which food is prepared and sold in eatinghouses
in Battersea are better than they have been in past years.
