Deaths.
The total number of deaths registered in the Borough of
Battersea during the year 1908 was 2,265, as compared with
2,431 during 1907, and a yearly average of 3,049 in the old
Parish of Battersea for the decennium 1891-1900. Of the total
deaths, 1,191 were males and 1,074 females, showing an excess of
117 males.
The death rate for Battersea is, therefore, 12.31 per 1,000
inhabitants, as compared with 13.8 for London. This rate is,
however, uncorrected, and, on analysing the 2,265 deaths registered
in the Borough of Battersea, it is found that 408 represent
deaths occurring within the Borough amongst persons not belonging
thereto. These deaths are to be deducted ; but, on the other
hand, there are 415 deaths registered outside the Borough of
Battersea residents, and these must be added, giving a corrected
number of deaths for Battersea during 1908 of 2,272 (1,190 males
and 1,082 females), an excess of 108 males and a corrected death
rate of 12.35, as compared with 13.8 for London (the total corrected
number of London deaths being 67,353).
Again, therefore, it is my pleasing duty to be able to record
a satisfactory decrease in the death rate of Battersea during 1908.
The rate is the lowest ever recorded in the Borough, and is 3 per
1,000 below the average for the ten years 1898-1907.
Subdividing the death rate amongst the three registration subdistricts,
it will be noted that in South-West Battersea an increase
has been recorded; while, on the other hand, in East Battersea
and North-West Battersea a marked decline has taken place,
that in East Battersea being specially noteworthy, amounting to
nearly 2 per 1,000 as compared with 1907, and 3 per 1,000 less
than the average for the ten years 1898-1907. This is a highly
satisfactory feature of this year's Annual Report, regard being
had to the fact that these two districts are in the main inhabited
by the less prosperous class of the inhabitants of the Borough.
