bouring village of Ynysddu during September and October. Two
of these cases had occurred in the same street in which this
"carrier" case had resided while staying at Cwmfelinfach, and in
connection with these cases the Local Medical Officer of Health's
report states: "The water supply at this time was very bad. It
was intermittent and badly filtered."
A review of the facts connected with this outbreak points
conclusively to the source of infection as being due to personal
infection conveyed by this man to other members of his family.
None of the cases proved fatal. The ages of the patients ranged
from 52 to 10½ years.
Three cases in the same family occurred in a house in Latch-
mere Grove. E. S—, aged 31, a cook out of employment, was
staying with her married sister. Not feeling well she attended
St. Thomas's Hospital, where she was admitted on the 7th April,
and the case was notified as Enteric Fever on the 11th April. On
enquiries being made, it was ascertained that her nephew,
H. T—, was taken to the Victoria Hospital, Chelsea, on the
30th March. He attended again on the 2nd April, when he was
admitted to the wards. The hospital authorities were communicated
with as to the nature of this boy's illness, and it was ascertained
from them he was admitted on the 2nd April suffering
from "indefinite malaise and pyrexia," and no more definite signs
developed for seven days, though the nature of the illness was
suspected to be Enteric Fever. Widal's reaction on the 7th day
day proved negative. No information had been given by the
father, when he visited the boy in hospital, that a previous case
of Enteric Fever had occurred at his house.
The case, I was further informed, was undoubtedly one of
Enteric Fever, as the boy had subsequently developed typical
spots, and the notification certificate was received on the 14th
April.
A sister of this patient, L. T—, subsequently developed the
disease, and was removed to hospital on the 23rd April.
