These vans are frequently inspected by night as well as
day. Twenty-five vans were found to be overcrowded, and
various structural defects in the vans or in the yards in which
they stand were dealt with. The new bye-laws relating to
tents, vans and sheds, which were confirmed by the Local
Government Board in 1904, gave powers to the Council to
have the yards in which these vans are situate adequately
paved. This has been extensively carried out, and the general
condition of these places has been improved. Constant attention
has to be paid to them, however, to prevent nuisances
arising. Only 2 cases of infectious disease were notified from
van dwellings during the year.
