Purity of Food
Supply.
First in importance stands the question of the
soundness and purity of the Food Supply, as is shown
by the attention that has again been devoted to the
matter by the legislature and the different Government
departments concerned.
Official
Samples.
Sale of Food
&c Drugs
Acts.
Under the provisions of the Sale of Food and Drugs
Acts 617 samples of various kinds of food were taken
and submitted for analysis by the Public Analyst,
Mr. Stokes. Of these samples 52 proved to be adulterated.
Details of the legal proceedings taken in
respect of these are set out in the Appendix marked P.
The proceedings are all of the usual character, and
resulted satisfactorily, so far as is possible, with such
an intricate and uncertain machine as these statutes.
None of the cases call for special comment, except that
I desire to record my appreciation of the manner in
which all the Officers engaged in this work have done
their duty, often under very great difficulties.
Samples for
information
and on delivery.
Beyond the samples officially taken many others
were purchased and analysed for the purposes of information.
It is only by such means that the Authority
can be kept aware of the quality of the Food on sale
in the Borough. 26 Samples of Milk and a few other
articles were taken on delivery from wholesale firms.
These were as follows: —
At Cambridge Heath Railway Station 13
Bethnal Green Infirmary 8
At Shops 4
City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest 1
