Virol; seven cow's milk and Nestle's milk; twenty-three Nestle's
milk only; one Nestle's milk and Nursery biscuit; one Nestle's
milk and Mellin's Food; one Nestle's milk and Ridge's Food; one
Nestle's milk and Semolina.
Of the partly breast fed infants, seven had cow's milk and
seven Nestle's milk in addition, while two were given boiled bread,
and one Nursery biscuit, with just a little sugar or butter and no
milk.
Bottles with rubber tubes were used in twenty-seven cases,
and nineteen mothers preferred to use no bottle at all, but fed
the child from a feeding cup, or with a spoon. In fifty-nine cases
boat shaped feeding bottles of various makes were used.
DIARRHCEAL DEATHS.
Enquiries were made as to the method of feeding in the case
of sixty-two infants who died during the year from diarrhoeal
diseases. In almost every case I was informed that the child had
been very delicate from birth, and often, that it was only with the
greatest care that it had been kept so long alive. It was found
that seventeen (27.4%) were entirely breast fed, and seven (11.3)
were partially so fed. Four of these last were given cow's milk
only, in addition to the natural food ; and of the other three, one had
Nursery biscuit, one cornflour, and one bread, prepared in each case
with Nestle's milk. Many mothers who can only partly breast
feed their children, think that cow's milk would disagree, and they
must therefore supplement in some other way.
Twenty-two hand fed infants had cow's milk only; nine Nestle's
milk only; three had both; two cow's milk or bread; and two
cow's milk and Ridge's Food.
That the mothers are beginning to realize the danger of the
bottle with the rubber tube would seem to be proved by the fact
that twenty-two boat shaped bottles were used as against twelve
with the tube; and that five mothers used no bottle of any kind,
but fed from a feeding cup or with a spoon.
