DEATHS OF INFANTS.
One fourth (25.17 per cent.) of the total deaths
from all causes were those of infants aged less than
twelve months; 4,152 children were born alive during
the year but only 3,578 survived twelve months, the
rest (574,) having succumbed to various diseases. A
mortality calculated upon these figures gives a rate
of 138 deaths per thousand births.
We shew some improvement in this direction over
1906 as in that year the rate was 158, twenty in
excess of the year under consideration. The general
Metropolitan rate has also fallen and stands at 116,
against 130 for the previous year.
In the first quarter of the year the infantile deaths
were 131 per thousand births; in the June quarter
they were 137; in the September quarter 122; and in
the last quarter they rose to 173.
In the appendix is a set of tables prepared in
accordance with instructions from the Local Government
Board referring exclusively to infantile deaths.
Of the total 574 deaths of infants, 108, a proportion
of 188 per cent. occurred in the first week of existence
and 188 or 32.7 per cent. in the first four weeks after
birth.
