" As a general recommendation I should advise that, with the
Guardians' agreement, men should be taken to strip up the main drain
at its junction with the sewer in Bishop's Road, and to open up
throughout, relay with new, and deal with each section and every
branch drain connected with the same as it was found, and so proceed
with the works from the lower end right throughout.
"There is one other feature, although strictly speaking not a sanitary
matter, but which will have considerable effect on any system of
drainage, which may be laid down, and that is the system of exhausts
from steam calorifiers.
" At present these, in many instances, blow off direct over gullies,
with the result that the stoneware pipes of any drainage system would
become heated and ultimately cracked and broken if this system was
permitted to continue.
" To prevent this a proper system of coolage tanks or cisterns must
be provided, into which these exhaust pipes should be made to
discharge, and the waste from same then conducted by means of proper
channels on to drain inlets, to be provided at suitable points and where
necessary throughout.
JOHN FOOT,
Chief Inspector.
