To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the Metropolitan
Borough of Hampstead.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to place before you my Annual Report
for the year 1908.
The vital statistics are chiefly remarkable for the low deathrate,
the lowest ever recorded in Hampstead, and the comparatively
low rate of infantile mortality. In the latter rate however, there
are possibilities of a considerable further reduction, and this we
may hope will be the result of the special efforts that are now
being made in this direction.
I would draw your special attention to the facts on pp. 84-88
relating to the samples of milk taken for bacteriological examination
during 1907-8. The results of the examination demonstrate the
urgent need for a thorough reform in the methods under which
milk is supplied in this country.
I am glad to acknowledge the excellent work of the staff of the
Department throughout the year. My thanks are due also to
the Chairman and the Members of the Public Health Committee
for their continued support, which I have greatly valued.
I have the honour to be,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
G. F. McCLEARY,
Medical Officer of Health.
May, 1909.
