The total number of births notified from the date the Act came
into operation, March 9th, to December 31st, was 977, including
the births of 30 stillborn infants. The total number of live births
notified was 947, and the total number of live births that actually
occurred during the same period, as ascertained from the registrar's
lists was 1,070. The live births notified were, therefore. 88.5 per
cent. of the live births actually occurring, and this result in the first
year's working of the Act may, I think, be considered satisfactory.
305 births were notified by medical practitioners, 123 by midwives,
531 by parents, and 18 from other sources. The Act has been found
of great value in Hampstead, but some years must elapse before its
full benefit will be reaped.
