Out of the 323 deaths registered during the year 305, or 94 per cent.,
took place amongst people over thirty-five years of age. The deaths from the
disease occur in the greatest number, as well as in the highest proportion to
the persons living, at the age period 65-75, although the numbers dying
between 35 to 45, 45 to 55, and 55 to 65 are also very considerable. This
is well seen in the following return for the last five years.

The parts of the human frame attacked by the disease as shown by the
medical certificates are numerous. Thus death was ascribed in 36 instances,
(17 males and 19 females) to cancer of the liver; in 35 instances (27 males and
8 females) to cancer of the stomach ; in 20 instances (18 males and 2 females)
to cancer of the oesophagus ; and in 54 instances (23 males and 31 females) to
cancer of the various parts of the intestines or their coverings. Among women
cancer of the uterus caused 43 deaths, and of the heart 30. The fullest particulars
of the parts affected by the disease, together with the ages and sex
of the persons who died are set out in a subsequent table (p. 78).
