TYPHUS FEVER.
No death occurred, nor has there been one registered from this disease
since 1898, when 1 was recorded. In twenty years only 9 deaths have been
returned by the registrars in Islington.
DIARRHŒA.
The diarrhoea record for the year was not satisfactory when compared
with previous returns, for 260 deaths were entered in the registers as against
an average of 202 in the preceding nineteen years (1885-1903).
These deaths represented a death rate of 0.76 per 1,000.
The deaths in each quarter of the year were as follows:—
Deaths. | Death rate. | |
---|---|---|
1st Quarter | 14 | 0.l6 |
2nd „ | 6 | 0.07 |
3rd „ | 230 | 2.70 |
4th „ | 10 | 0.12 |
Total | 260 | 0.76 |
The third quarter was responsible for the increased number of deaths, for
in this period the returns were higher than any that obtained since 1899, when
236 were returned.
In the month of July 15 deaths were registered, in August, 134, and in
September (5 weeks), 81, the mean temperatures for these months being
respectively 66.8°, 62.5°, and 57°, while the mean temperature for the whole
quarter was 62.1°,; and the ground temperatures at four feet deep were
respectively 587°, 60.8°, and 57.4°., the mean ground temperature being 58.9°.
Rain fell on thirty-two days in the same quarter, namely, on eight days in
July, on nine days in August, and on fifteen days in September, while the total
rainfall was 8.31 inches, of which 3.15 inches fell in July, 3.22 in August, and
1.94 in September.
