In his comments on these returns the Reporter remarks that " it will be
seen that the total deaths from Consumption returned in the United Kingdom
in the five years 1897-1901, is 5,320 amongst benefit members, and 1,626
amongst wives and widows of members, in a total of 6,946 lives claimed by one
form of disease alone, the percentage of deaths from Consumption to the
deaths from all causes being 15.11 in the case of the benefit members, and
13.25 in the case of the wives and widows." It would be extremely interesting
to quote this document in full, but as it is necessary to curtail, it must suffice
to quote one further paragraph.
