Ages at Death.—In the annexed table (XV.) there is a full statement
of the number of persons who died at twelve age periods. On examining this
table the first and most notable feature that presents itself is that at each of
the age periods under 55 years there was a decrease in the number of deaths.
Thus, during the first year of life the number fell from an average of 1,351 to
1,140 being a decrease of 211; in the period 1 to 5 years the number decreased
from the average of 754 to 603, a decrease of 151; in the period 5 to 15 the
number fell from 203 to 165, or a decrease of 38; in the period 15 to 25 there
was a decrease from 318 to 295, or 23; in the period 35 to 45 the diminution
was from 449 to 439, a decrease of 10, and in the period 45 to 55, the number
decreased from 531 to 521 being a fall of 10.
At the remaining age periods there was an increased mortality, thus in the
period 55 to 65, the number of deaths rose from 584 to 603, in the period 65 to
75 from 613 to 666, in the period 75 to 85 from 452 to 496, and in the period
85 to 95 from 104 to hi. In the period 95 and upwards there was a decrease
of 3 deaths.
These figures are even better than they have appeared, because no
allowance has been made for the increase in the population.
SEASONAL MORTALITY.
The mortality in the quarters was variable, for although the deaths
numbered as many as 1,436 in the first quarter, they decreased to 1,106 in the
second, but increased to 1,284 in the third, and to 1,410 in the fourth.
