districts; after which comes Barnsbury, then Islington Sonth-East, next
Upper Holloway, and lastly Highbury.
Lower Holloway 10.1 persons per house.
Barnsbury 9.8 „ „
Islington South-East 9.4 „ „
Upper Holloway 8.2 „ „
Highbury 7.3
The Borough 8'67 „ ,,
When these figures are contrasted with figures I have calculated from the
census of 1891, I find that there has been a slight increase in the average of
the number of persons living in the houses in four out of the five
sub-districts.
This increase amounted to 0.2 person in Upper Holloway, 0.11 in Lower
Holloway, 0.77 in Islington South-East, and 0.22 in Highbury. There was,
however, a decrease of 0.13 person per house in Barnsbury. The increase of
0.77 (nearly 1) per house in Islington South-East is accounted for by the fact
that the number of inhabited houses in that district showed a decrease of 544
(of which the houses in the demolished Norfolk Square area numbered 45)
compared with 1891. On the other hand there has been an increase of 809
houses in Upper Holloway, and of 442 in Highbury. The number of houses in
Lower Holloway and Barnsbury remained practically the same although there
has been really a decrease of 1 in the former, and of 5 in the latter district. On a
survey of the whole borough it is evident that the housing accommodation did
not keep pace with the increase in the population, small though the increase was,
when compared with preceding decades: for in 1891 each house contained on
an average 8.42 persons, who increased to 8.67 in 1901, or 0.25 person per house.
That is to say, that every 4 houses contained 1 more person. The number
of houses only increased by 761, as compared with an increase of 3,738
between 1881 and 1891. It may be pointed out that in each succeeding
census since 1811, the number of persons per house has gradually increased,
as may be seen in the following return:—
