The Registrar-General remarks on these figures that "it will be seen that
the two methods used for calculating the marriage-rate lead to very different
conclusions, for while the proportion of marriages to total population at the
successive census periods have shown a progressive increase, on the other
hand, the proportions to the unmarried and widowed population, aged 15
years and upwards, have shown a progressive decrease. There can be no doubt
that the changes in the marriage-rate are misrepresented by the former, but
are shown with approximate accuracy by the latter method."
