Bakehouses.—There are altogether 222 bakehouses in Islington, of which
102 are built underground. There are in addition to this latter number 38
which are not in use, and consequently have not been licensed. The ovens,
however, still remain, and they are, therefore, visited from time to time by
the Inspector to see that they are not used. It would be well, that they
should now be dismantled by the removal or blocking up of their ovens, for
as long as they are allowed to remain it will be essential that the workshops'
inspector should visit them.
During the year 33 underground bakehouses, that had not been placed in
a state to meet the requirements of the Council at the end of 1903, were
licensed. There remains now only one bakehouse, which is unoccupied, in
which the alterations have not been made. The owner, however, states that
it is his intention to make them at some future time. Possibly, however, it
may be never again used, as the required alterations are considerable. The
state of the bakehouses generally is very good. They have recently been
inspected by Mr. J. R. Leggatt, the Superintendent and Chief Inspector, who
has presented a report on the subject, in which he states that—"There is a
marked improvement in their general condition, and there is a desire on the
part of the occupiers, especially of those underground bakehouses which have
been certified, to keep them clean." He, however, noted in several instances
that coal receptacles had not been provided, and that consequently coals had
been deposited on the floors of the bakehouses. He also found in a few
instances that clothes had been dried in them.

The following is a list of the Unused Bakehouses the ovens of which have neither been removed nor bricked up:—
