These inspections included the examination, by Mr. West, of 265 bakehouses,
113 boot and shoe shops, 25 cycle shops, 28 furriers, 58 pianoforte works,
41 tailors' shops, 17 wheelwrights, 30 coachbuilding shops, in addition to many
others which are set out in his report (p. 181). Miss Gray has inspected the
premises of 280 dressmakers, 171 laundries, 82 milliners, 61 mantle makers,
63 blouse and skirt makers, 50 fur sewers, 49 tie makers, 41 tailors, 27 underclothiers,
18 artificial flower makers, 18 leather goods manufacturers, 16 jet
and bead workers, besides many others which are duly set out in page 176.
Altogether Mr. West made 4,732 inspections and visits, while Miss Gray
made 3,216.
Registers.—Each inspector keeps a separate register on the card
system. On the Female Inspector's register there were at the end of the year
1,040 premises containing 1,781 workrooms, while on the Male Inspector's
register there were 1,238 workplaces containing 1,738 workrooms. Thus at
the end of the year there were 2,278 workshops on the register.
Additions and Removal from the Register.—There were added
to Miss Gray's register 159 workplaces, while 202 have been removed; and to
Mr. West's register there were added 45 workshops, and 6 have been removed.
The total workshops added to the register was, therefore, 104, while 208 have
been removed, leaving the net number on the register as stated.
Sanitation.
There was a general improvement noticed in the sanitary conditions of
the workshops, and there has been again in evidence a disposition on the part
of the owners to assist the inspectors in their endeavour to provide wholesome
surroundings for the workers. In the following table are set forth the
particulars of some of the matters dealt with in 1904, and in the preceding
eight years.
