occupy an ever increasing number of houses that were formerly occupied
by members of one family, but are now let in tenements or lodgings. Let us
see how far this is true. The censuses of 1891 and 1901 are fortunately
available, and give the desired information.

Thus in the ten years there was an increase of 6,408 tenements, each containing
from one to four rooms. These figures also indicate that
12,955 rooms were occupied in single tenements.

making a total of 132,092 rooms which were let out in tenements of the sizes
mentioned. This was an increase of 18,326 rooms on the return of 1891, when
