FOR THE YEAR 1904.
SUB-DISTRICTS, AREA, POPULATION AND DENSITY.
Sub-Districts.—The Borough of Islington is for the purpose of the
registration of births and deaths, divided into seven sub-registration districts,
to each of which a registrar is appointed, so that fairly complete mortality
returns are available for them. Originally, that is to say in 1837, when registration
commenced, the parish consisted of only two such districts, but as
time passed and it became more and more populous they were increased for
the convenience of the public,* so that to-day they number seven as stated.
Wards.—The Borough is also divided into eleven wards for the purpose
of municipal representation in the Council, but the tabulation of the diseases
and the deaths occurring in them has not been extended to the same degree as
in the case of the sub-registration districts. Nevertheless particulars as to the
notifiable infectious diseases, the gross number of deaths, and the deaths from
the epidemic diseases have been extracted from the returns, and are dealt with
in this report.
Areas.—The Borough measures 3,092 statute acres, or nearly five square
miles. These, which are the gross measurement, include 13.2 acres of water,
