Factories, Workshops, Laundries and Bakehouses, Inspection

Bakehouses.--The Public Health Sub-Committee visited 119 Underground
Bakehouses during the quarter, in company with the Medical Officer
of Health and the Chief Inspector. In every instance a communication has
been sent to the occupiers or owners advising them that before a certificate
is granted by the Council in accordance with section 101 (2) of the
" Factory and Workshop Act, 1901," certain specified alterations must be
carried out in order to comply with the requirements necessary to render the
premises suitable for the purpose.

Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I have pleasure in submitting for your consideration a report of my work for the three
months ending the 4th April, 1903, during which period you will observe I have visited 1,172
places of business, comprising factories, workshops, and work-rooms in the Borough, and
reported upon various nuisances existing thereon; 531 inspections and 641 re-inspections were
made, including visits to the following trades:—'112 tailors, 190 shoemakers, 46 pianoforte
makers, 31 cycle makers, 63 bakehouses, 194 restaurants, and 536 miscellaneous.
During the quarter, 90 notices have been served for the abatement of nuisances, 82 workshops
have been limewhited, 7 additional w.c.'s have been provided (5 for males and 2 for
females), also 108 other improvements have been carried out.
Outworkers.—In accordance with Section 107 of the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, I have
sent to the Medical Officers of Health of various Metropolitan Boroughs the names and addresses
of 140 outworkers who live and work at home in their districts for tradespeople in this
Borough.
