DIPHTHERIA.
Membranous croup is included under this heading.
Diphtheria was notified in 871 instances, which return is 101 above the
corrected average of the ten years 1892-1901. It is, however, below the return
for the preceding year.
The cases represent an attack-rate of 2.55 per 1,000 inhabitants, as
against a mean decennial rate of 2.31 per 1,000.
In the County of London the attack-rate was 230 per 1,000, and in the
Encircling Districts 2.55 per 1,000. The local rate was also higher than that
of any of these boroughs taken individually, although it was nearly approached
by St. Pancras, with a rate of 3.48 per 1,000, and by Hackney, with a rate of
3.19.
Hospital Isolation.—Out of the 876 cases notified 615, or 70 per cent.,
were isolated in a hospital, while 263 were retained at home.
Fatality.—104 deaths, representing 11.8 per cent., occurred among the
total cases, of which 69, or 11.2 per cent., occurred in hospitals, and 35, or
13.3 Per cent., in their homes.
The fatality from Diphtheria at different periods of life is set out in
Table C1.
