REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1902.
To the Right Worshipful the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Islington.
Gentlemen,
It affords me great pleasure in presenting the forty-seventh
Annual Report of the Medical Officer of Health to congratulate you on the
excellent state of the health of your borough.
While it is gratifying to note that the epidemic of Small Pox,
which commenced in August, 1901, finally terminated in August, 1902, it is
not satisfactory to find that this disease recurs again and again in this
Country, although the means by which the German Empire has practically
stamped it out are well known, widely recognized, and are equally available
here. I, of course, allude to vaccination and re-vaccination.
It has been a matter of great regret to myself and to very many persons
interested in the prevention of Consumption that in the exercise of your
discretion you did not accept my advice with regard to its voluntary
notification.
I trust, however, that on a future occasion, should the Public Health
Committee again recommend it for your consideration, you will fall into line
with the numerous Sanitary Authorities, Metropolitan and Provincial, large
and small, who now deem that the prevention of this disease is one of the
most important and urgent duties devolving on them.
