DEATHS IN PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.
In Local Public Institutions.—1,525 persons died in these institutions
during the twelve months, of whom 909 were persons who had lived in the
borough, while 616 were patients who had come to it for treatment.
Of Residents.—As usual by far the greater number of deaths occurred
in the poor law establishments of Islington, for the returns show that 565
persons died in the Islington Infirmary, and 166 in the Workhouses, while
one person died in the Workhouse Schools. The Great Northern Central
Hospital was credited with 130 deaths, the Memorial Cottage Hospital with
13, and the London Fever Hospital with 4. Ten deaths took place in
Holloway Gaol, and 6 in Pentonville Prison.
Of Non-Residents.—422 deaths were registered from Holborn Infirmary,
122 from the Great Northern Central Hospital, 23 from St. Pelagia's Creche,
9 from the Fever Hospital, and 7 from the Memorial Cottage Hospital.
Of Residents in Public Institutions outside the Borough.—
As many as 691 persons belonging to Islington died in public institutions
situated outside the borough, of whom 24 died in the North-Western Fever
Hospital, 43 in the Eastern Fever Hospital, 55 in the North-Eastern Fever
Hospital, 13 in the Hospital Ship "Castalia," and 12 in the Hospital Ship
"Atlas"; 15 died in Middlesex Hospital, 57 in the Children's Hospital,
Great Ormond Street, 55 in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, 53 in the Royal Free
Hospital, 27 in Colney Hatch Asylum, 14 in Cane Hill Asylum, 14 in the
London County Asylum, Dartford, and 13 in Clayburn Asylum.
Of Residents in Public Institutions within and without the
Borough.—Altogether 1,600 persons, residents of Islington, died in
Metropolitan Institutions, whether situated within or without the borough.
These represent 28.4 per cent. of the total deaths credited to it. It
is truly an amazing return, for it shows that 1 in every 4 persons in their
last illness sought the relief so generously afforded by the hospitals, whether
supported bv the poor rate or by voluntary contributions.

Of Residents' Accidental and other Deaths without the Borough.

46 deaths were known. They are fully set out in Table LVIII.
