INFLUENZA..
Influenza was more prevalent, as judged by the mortality, than it was in
1901, as the 83 registered deaths were 37 in excess of the return for that year.
The mortality was, however, less by 18 deaths than the corrected average, 101,
of the preceding ten years.
It has been only since 1890 that it has been very prevalent, for
past records are undoubtedly very low. Thus from 1856-60 only 18 deaths
occurred, from 1861-65 12 from 1866-70 10, from 1871-75 2, from 1876-80 2,
1881-85 2, and 1886-90 40. In the first two years of this last mentioned period
no death was registered, in 1888 only 1, in 1889 only 1, but in 1890 they
increased to 38, since which time the disease has been fatally prevalent.
The incidence of the disease was very unequal in the Borough, for whereas
23 deaths occurred in Highbury sub-district, and 24 in South-East Islington,
only 3 were registered in Tufnell, 6 in Tollington, 8 in Lower Holloway, 8 in
Barnsbury, and 11 in Upper Holloway.
