The Mortality in the Sub-Registration Districts.—The mortality
rates ranged from 14.37 per 1,000, caused by 945 deaths in Highbury, to 18.77,
representing 1,040 deaths in Barnsbury. In the other sub-districts the
death-rates were as follows:—Tufnell, 14.84 (491 deaths), Tollington, 15.03
(527 deaths), Lower Holloway, 16.88 (714 deaths), South-East Islington, 17.03
(1,313 deaths), and in Upper Holloway, 17.23 per 1.000 (605 deaths).
Some of these death-rates are very low, when it is recollected that they
represent the mortality of communities which are as large as, or even larger
than, many places which are tabulated by the Registrar-General among the
large towns of England and Wales.
Mortality Rates in the Wards varied from 12.06 per 1,000 (305
deaths) in Mildmay, and 14.84 per 1,000 (491 deaths) in Tufnell, to 18.56 per
1,000 (618 deaths) in St. Peter's, and 19.07 per 1,000 (648 deaths) in
Barnsbury. In Tollington, with 527 deaths, the death-rate was 15.03, in
Canonbury, with 472 deaths, 15.14, in Highbury, with 570 deaths, 16.06,
in St. Mary's, with 293 deaths, 16.66, and in Lower Holloway, with 714
deaths, 16.88.
The death-rate of Mildmay was very low during the last three quarters.
Thus, although in the first quarter it was 17.40, in the second it was only
11.44, in the third 8.38, and in the fourth 11.07. These rates are very good,
especially when it is recollected that the ward contains over 24,000 persons.
(Vide Table XVI.)
The Ages at Death.—Compared with the preceding ten years there
was a decrease of deaths at four age-periods, and an increase at seven
periods. Thus under five years the mortality fell from an average of 2,219
deaths to 1,906, being a decrease of 313. At the age period 5.15 the deaths
decreased from an average of 222 per annum to 198, a decrease of 24, and at
the age period 95 and upwards there was a decrease of 4.
The age-periods at which an increase was noticed were from 25-35, when
the average rose from 328 to 339, an increase of 11; from 35-45, when it
increased from 463-470, an increase of 7; from 45-55, when it rose from 537
to 571, an increase of 34; from 55-65, when it went from 582 to 664, an increase
of 38; from 65-75, when the average rose from 451 to 468, an increase of 17;
and from 85-95, when there was a rise from 100 to 141, an increase of 41.
