DISTRICT INSPECTION.
The borough, for the purpose of its proper inspection, is divided into
fourteen districts, to each of which an Inspector is assigned.
Inspections and Visits.—During the year, 7,158 houses were inspected,
in addition to which 53,642 subsequent visits were made to serve notices, to
examine the work that was in progress, to meet owners and builders, or for
other reasons. 807 houses were also examined as the result of house to house
inspection. There were also other visits made such as 83 to cow houses,
13 to slaughter houses, 2,389 to stables and yards. 21 to courts, and 30
to factories and workshops. In carrying out their duties under the adulteration
acts, the district Inspectors made 360 calls to obtain samples for analysis.
Altogether the inspections and visits amounted to 63,701.

Improvements effected.—These inspections resulted in 12,533 separate sanitary defects being detected and abated, of which the following are among the chief. (videTable CXIX.).
