ADMINISTRATION OF THE FACTORY AND WORKSHOP
ACT, 1901.
In compliance with section 132 of the Factory and Workshop Act, 1901,
it becomes the duty of your Medical Officer of Health to report specifically on
the administration of this act in the borough.
The administration of the clauses of this act, with which the Council has
had to deal, has been most effective, and this too when examined from every
point of view, for it will be found that not only more inspections and visits
have been made than hitherto, but that a large amount of sanitary work has
been accomplished.
Inspections and Visits.—There are two inspectors, Miss Jessy Gray
and Mr. George West, engaged in the administration of the Act under the
control and guidance of the Medical Officer of Health. They have now been
employed on this work since 1896, during which time it has been of a progressive
character, as the following return of their inspections and re-visits
shows:—
1896 5,996 inspections and re-visits.
1897 6,761 ,, ,,
1898 6,882 „ „
1899 7,233 ,, ,,
1900 7,411 „ „
1901 7,371 ,, ,,
1902 8,060 ,, „
Total 49,714 ,, ,,
These inspections and visits would not have had any significance if
they had not left behind them the record of much good work, which has
been mentioned from time to time in the Annual and Quarterly Reports
of your Medical Officer of Health. Among the matters dealt with were
the following:—
