INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN THE PUBLIC ELEMENTARY
SCHOOLS.
NotIfIable InfectIous DIseases.—These are the dIseases whIch the
PublIc Health London Act, I89I, makes compulsorIly notIfIable.
Number of Cases among Scholars—I,I8I cases were dIscovered to
have attacked scholars attendIng the publIc elementary schools, whIle 755
other cases occurred In houses, or homes In whIch chIldren who were In
attendance at these schools resIded.
Small Pox.—In only I4 cases were the chIldren attacked attendIng
these schools.
Scarlet Fever.—As many as 664 school chIldren (or 5 less than In the
prevIous year) were found to be sufferIng from Scarlet Fever. 29 cases
occurred at Yerbury Road Board School, 36 at Montem Street Board
School, 29 at York Road Board School, 24 at BuckIngham Street, Canonbury
Road and CaledonIan Road Board Schools respectIvely, 23 at Queen's Head
Street and Hornsey Road Board Schools, 22 at Forster Board School, and
numbers varyIng from I9 downwards at the remaInIng schools.
24I cases were found In the houses or homes of the chIldren In school
attendance.
DIphtherIa and Membranous Croup..405 cases were known among
scholars, of whIch 35 belonged to Hungerford Road Board School, 27 to
WhIttIngton Board School, and 20 to Duncombe Road Board School, whIle
numbers varyIng from I5 to o occurred In the remaInIng publIc elementary
schools.
202 cases were referred to houses or homes In whIch chIldren In school
attendance resIded.
EnterIc Fever.—64 cases of EnterIc occurred among scholars, and 78
In houses or homes from whIch they attended school.
